Here’s what to watch in each category, what to check, and a couple of popular products to keep an eye on. We don’t list prices or discounts until a deal is live and checked, because they change constantly.

Dog beds are a sensible Black Friday buy because they’re pricey and they last. Orthopedic and bolster beds for older or larger dogs are worth watching most.

What to check: measure your dog nose to tail while they’re curled up or stretched out, then compare that with the bed’s inside sleeping area, not the outside size. What to check: the bag size and the formula (brands sell many look-alike recipes), the best-by date, and the price per pound. If you’re switching foods, switch gradually over about a week by mixing in more of the new food each day, and check with your vet first if your pet has health issues. How we check pet deals

Every deal we add to this tracker goes through the same quick checks:

• Retailer page checked on a date. We check the price on the retailer’s own product page and note when. Prices can change within hours, so confirm before you buy.
• Price history. We compare the deal with recent price history using Keepa or CamelCamelCamel for Amazon. If it matches last month’s normal price, it’s not a deal.
• Seller check. We prefer listings sold by the brand or the retailer itself, not unknown resellers.
• Expiry dates. For food, treats and supplements, check the best-by date on arrival. Cheap doesn’t help if it expires before you use it.
• No fake “was” prices. We don’t repeat inflated “list price” claims. Any saving we mention is against a price the item has really sold for recently.

Smart buying tips for pet owners

• Only stock up on what your pet already eats. A big bag of a new food is a gamble – if it doesn’t agree with your pet, you’re stuck with it. Stock up on proven favorites, and keep an eye on best-by dates and storage space.
• Measure before you buy. Most returns of beds and harnesses come down to size. Measure your pet and check the brand’s size chart, not just the photo.
• Check return policies on the official page. Policies differ by store and by item, and opened food, litter and some health products may not be returnable. Holiday return windows are set by each retailer, so check the store’s official returns page before you buy. Is it worth stocking up on pet food on Black Friday?

Sometimes, but food discounts are usually modest. It’s worth it if the food is one your pet already eats, the best-by date gives you plenty of time, and you have cool, dry space to store it. Compare the deal with your usual Subscribe & Save or autoship price first – that’s often just as good.

Are early Black Friday pet deals real?

Some are, some aren’t. Some early prices match what you’ll see on Black Friday itself; others are ordinary prices with a holiday label. Check price history with Keepa or CamelCamelCamel – if the price is at or near its recent low, it’s a real deal.
